History

The foothills and dramatic mountains in this part of western North Carolina attracted native people who hunted here for thousands of years. After he fought in the War for Independence, Gen. William Lenoir built a fortified residence in the area which he called Fort Defiance. In the 19th century, the vast stands of virgin pine attracted those in the timber industry. The arrival of the railroad in the 1870s allowed Lenoir and the surrounding communities to truly grow.
