History of Granite Falls
Although Native Americans were the first people to inhabit the area that is now known as Granite Falls
, a man by the name of Andrew Baird arrived here in 1791, and immediately envisioned all the power that those rapidly flowing waters could produce. A forge was first built along the river to operate an iron works manufacturing business.
A cotton mill eventually followed in 1880 and the community was incorporated shortly thereafter in 1889.
Before being named Granite Falls in 1899
, the town was known by many other names including Baird's Forge, Granite and Catawba View. When the railroad built tracks through Granite Falls in 1884, the town exploded with growth. Today, you will find a delightful array of businesses and beautiful real estate in Granite Falls.
