Lenoir, North Carolina, is beautifully nestled in the rolling, forested foothills of the western portion of the state. Hibriten Mountain, part of the Brushy Mountain chain, is located within Lenoir. This All-America City is home to just under 20,000 residents. The community was named after Revolutionary War hero, Gen. William Lenoir.

History

The community was originally known as Tucker's Barn, thanks to the arrival of the Tucker family in 1765. The Lenoir Furniture Company was founded in 1889. The business spurred the growth of the furniture industry across the region. The Southern Furniture Market in Lenoir would eventually attract wholesale buyers to see previews of new furniture lines.

Parks and Recreation

Those that invest in Lenoir real estate will want to check out the Lenoir Aquatic and Fitness Center. The extensive faciltiies include racquetball courts, fitness equipment and weight room. Fort Defiance includes a period mansion that has been carefully restored. Visitors will step back in time to the first years of the republic. Every October, Fort Defiance hosts Living History Days. Craftsmen demonstrate how tools were made and employed in the late 1700s. A juggler wanders about, enthralling children with his prodigious talents. Interpreters educate visitors about the trials and tribulations of life during that period of early American history.

Events

Visit the annual North Carolina Blackberry Festival in downtown Lenoir, and you'll likely see the berry-stained faces of those that entered the blackberry-eating contest. Kildeer Farms offers blackberries to those that want to take them home instead. Get to the festival early to get in on the free blackberry cobbler. Arts and crafts vendors love to display their wares at this very special July event. Live music emanates from the Caldwell Musician Stage. There's "Parkin' Lot Pickin" for cash prizes. Contestants are required to dispense with makeup and pageant attire to compete for the title of the Blackberry Princess. Only K-3 students need apply!
